The Narrator relates how he changed lives from operating as a successful horse ferryman between North Africa and Spain to working as a tinker in Jerusalem, and the tragedy that unfolded when his elderly ‘widow’ from his earlier life found him alive and unchanged decades later. He also discusses the origins and early history of the Franks, and how the Papacy came to have an unexpected influence over the old western European half of the Roman Empire, which was coming to be called Christendom.

(Pope Zachary —not mentioned by name in The Tape Recorder Trilogy— was the last pope who announced his election to and sought the approval of the emperor in Constantinople. That was in 741 CE. Within two generations, the Papacy would become spiritually entirely independent of the patriarchs of the Eastern Empire and secularly dependent on the rising power of the Franks in Western Europe, which was coming to be called ‘Christendom.’)
